Snikt! The Wolverine Comic Table!

Snikt Snikt!
Today I was inspired by my recent trip to a vintage warehouse to make my own comic book bedside table! So here I am writing something of a tutorial so that everyone out there can so the same, because it's super duper easy.
Before
After

What you will need:

  • A boring old table (or other bit of hard furniture)
  • Old comic book / zine / issue of National Geographic / porn / other visually stimulating material that you no longer want to read and don't mind cutting up (please don't cut up your ultra rare Spiderman #1 comic!)
  • PVA glue mixed with a little water
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint in your choice of colour (optional)
  • Wallpaper smoother (optional), mine was about £1 from Wilko
  • Craft knife (optional)
This is how I did it:
  • First off put on some suitable music, I chose Bossanova by Pixies and to give you an idea of the time scale, the record is 40 minutes long and I'd completed this project from start to finish including washing off my paintbrush before the end of the second side. You can chose another music if you like, but this is my recommended soundtrack for this project.

  • Next up, clean and dust the table if you need to so it's all nice for sticking stuff to. Mine had cobwebs all over it, yours probably doesn't.
  • Then you may want to paint the table if it's a yacky colour, I probably should have done this step but since I didn't have a lot of time I skipped it. You can always paint the table afterwards if you mask off the comic section properly.
  • While it's all drying, take your comic and cut outs the bits that you want. Whatever you do, make sure you don't get any pictures of Jubilee in there. I used this X Men annual that I got in a charity shop for 20p.
  • Then lay out your comic bits onto the table and arrange them how you like. I liked this:

but if you had more time you could do it fancier or even make up a whole new storyline using different sections from each story. I just liked all these pictures of Wolverine looking pretty aggro.
  • Then take your gluey mix and paintbrush:
and stick all the pictures down where you want them (it doesn't matter too much if they hang over the edge because you can trim them back with your craft knife at the end). Then you can smewth out any bubbles with the smewther, apply a thin layer of the gluey mix over the top and smewth again to get rid of lumps and excess glue.
  • Wait for it all to dry (this is the hardest part of the whole thing) and wash off your paintbrush.
  • When it's dry you can trim off any untidy edge bits with your craft knife, please be careful of your fingees when doing this. My table has roundy corners so I also trimmed these into shape:
  • That's it! Now you can enjoy your table in all its wonderous glory! I think mine turned out really cool:
Not bad for a super cheap and quick project!
This project was brought to you today by the letters X, Snikt!, Himalaya with Michael Palin and the number #
