Top Trompes

Yesterday I was so excited about getting my  Society6  shop up and running that I completely forgot to post about another thing I meant to write about. Last Friday we had a drawing class with  Dan Heath  for developing themes n stuff; which made a nice change as it's usually an all female year group with all female teachers [not that I have a problem with women of course, being one myself, but it's nice to hear a man's perspective every now and then]. I struggle with drawing days because I can be disheartened when what's on the paper isn't the same as what's in my brain, but by the end of this day I had produced something I really liked: Donald Trompe-l'Å“il It's a 3D heart made from photocopies of my work, stuffed inside, sewn around the edge and with stringys coming all out of it. It looks very  Trompe-l'Å“il; a word I can spell but not pronounce, so don't ask me; and the scan sort of makes it looks like  Trompe-l'Å“il within  Trompe-l

These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things

Image
Hola! I've been in university for over a month now (studying for a Textiles BA with hhhons) and thought I'd share some of my favourite things that I've made there so far. My project is about the film Metropolis ; mostly we've only been screenprinting so that's why it's mostly screenprints. This was a piece of fabric that I'd spilled Procien dye on; ever the thrifty gal I didn't want to waste the piece so I hand splodged black dye all over it and then printed the red hearts using my exposed screen. It turned out rather punk rock and is one of my favourite things I've probably ever made! I printed the same hearts in a slightly varied pattern on a thin piece of muslin which makes them look very ye olde fashioned illustratey. Which I also like! I also cut this rather marvellous A3(ish) sized stencil - regular readers will know about my passion for the art of stencilling  - for some stencil prints. Most people peeping over my shoulder while I wa

Take Your Tablets With Food

It was my wonderous penpal Sally 's birthday on 5th August so amongst other gifties that I sent her I made her a couple of Toilet Boys themed things (as she likes them and I still have a lot of this fabric left): Open Sesame Closed Sesame  As I have mentioned before, her favourite colours are neon pink and green, so I made her a cover for her tablet computer - I guessed the size, but she tells me it fits perfectly so that was lucky - and used bright green lining with a bright pink button for fastening. I used interfacing to make it all sturdier. I've never made a clutch bag / computer cover before so I was happy with this one! Oven Glove of Love II  I also made her an oven glove of love as the thickness of denim lends itself very well to the needs of an oven glove! Also like me, she likes cooking and eating. A lot. You can't see from the picture but I lined the glove with tiger print fabric, rawr and of course I included a layer of heat-proof wadding so she d

It's Vintage, Dahling (Honest)

I was recently blessed not only with the gift of a wonderful friend named Laura, but also with the gift of a wonderful friend named Laura who gives wonderful gifts of BIG BAGS OF VINTAGE FABRIC Big Bags Maudella 5443 And as I had previously been blessed with my friend Helen over at  Nellys Treasures  who recently gave me Maudella vintage pattern 5443 I decided to put these two elements together and came up with this: Faux Vintage But Also Really Vintage The brown squiggly one on the left I made for myself and the bluey greeny forresty one I made for Laura as a bon voyage present as soon she will be moving to Qatar to be a teacher. Nooooo! As for what else I've been up to; I've re-stocked my Etsy shop , am getting mentally prepared for uni (kinda) and today I attended my end of year exhibition for my Level 2 City & Guilds art course: Yup, that's me That's my work that I'm pointing the pointy at and also the lacy one above it. Yup! And her

Your Bunting Daughter

Image
A couple of weeks ago I mentioned my pal Gemma's brownie business and something about bunting. Well Gemma asked me to make her some special bunting for her market stall and here it is: It's 2 sided, and all made from scraps of heritage type fabrics; gingham, checks, plaid / tartan, French toile, houndstooth, tweed, etc., which I had been wanting to do for a while. For an extra special fancy finish I used a velvety ribbon binding, tres classy! Unfortunately I didn't realise until I delivered the bunting that Gemma has a slight mental allergy to velvet ... oops! Nonetheless she is pleased as Punch and happy as Judy. You can catch Dark Matters at Boscombe Market on Saturdays starting this weekend (25th May)! Cat-a-holic

Two new things - firstly I made another new cushion cover for my bachelorette pad That's the last of my lovely Corazones Black fabric from the now defunct Repro Depot Fabrics , which makes me a little bit sad. Number two is that I made and listed my recycled cat dress on Folksy (complete with dodgy pictures of me) Sorry, for SUPER KAWAII people only!

Short n Sweet

My sumptuous friend / 'real job' colleague Gemma runs a Brownie business called Dark Matters and had a stall at Rumble In The Jumble on Monday... observe the bunting! I made the bunting! It's my personal, private bunting but I lent it out because I'm such a special individual. Gemma makes theee most delicious gourmet brownies, I can recommend the salted caramel flavour! That's all. Follow Gemma @EatDarkMatters Merci

Smell The Glove

It's been a while since my last post, right?! I'd love to say that I've been hard at work with some major super duper crafty magic up my sleeves but it would be one great white whale of a fib. I did manage to finish my final piece for Unit 2 of my Mixed Media Art course: Since I had no idea what I was doing I think I am happy with it. Today I decided to have a selfish crafting day and made a couple of things for myself! WOAH NOW Pom Pommes Frites A new cushion cover featuring Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham and pom pom trim! The Dr. Seuss fabric was from Abakhan and the pom pom trim was from Fabric Land . I also made this swede punk rock Toilet Boys oven glove: Glove of Love This was my first ever attempt at making an oven glove so I'm quite pumped with the result. I decided to use the Toilet Boys denim (from The Fabric Fairy ) as I have a lot of it and I figured it would be hard-wearing. The heat proof wadding, lining and everything else came from Fa

Babbling Brooks

Bonjour, mes petits choux-fleurs, Once again I have been screenprinting in my art class! I am working towards my final piece for this unit all about ME, so this work is all in preparation for that. I recently watched  Pandora's Box , a silent film from 1929 starring Louise Brooks. After looking very briefly into her life I found out that she died the day after I was born (8 August 1985). Soooo I just thought that was kind of interesting, as if I had bumped her off the face of the planet [I am sure this is not the case, but if it is then Ms. Brooks; I am truly sorry]. This is Louise Brooks: Lulu Here are my screenprints: I am happy overall with how they turned out; it wasn't the easiest picture to convert to a stencil by hand, without machine aid so I lost some of the details. Anyway the above prints aren't even part of my final piece, oh no! These were just bonuses. Here is what I'm doing for my final piece: I decided (with the help of Helen at Nel

International Success Story

Remember my doilies? Sure you do! Well I delivered most of my existing stock over to Nelly's Treasures in Cardiff Fashion Quarter this week. Where apparently they are being admired by one and all! Does this mean that I can officially say my work sells in two countries now?! It definitely means I can start working on all new stock... Awww yisssss!

He's A Sketchy Looking Tom

Image
In my continuing quest to become a middling to good artist I attended a 'How To Sketch Animals Real Good' class on Saturday. We were allowed to draw any animal we liked; the obvious choice was my cat so that's who I drew! Here's a picture of him for reference: Halloween Cat N'awwww. Here's what I drew: Scarifying! Intense. My art teacher said it had a mysterious cat expression and was 'terrifying', which I took in the only way I could (a compliment); it is kind of creepily just slightly out of proportion and odd. Still an improvement my stick lion. This post was written under the influence of The Victorian English Gentlemens Club

Marbleous

Hola! I'm still slogging away at the art classes; we just started a new unit which is all about ourlovelyselves and last night's lesson was on screenprinting, so I thought I'd share my work since I loooved it! Regular readers might have picked up on my love of all things 60s, Pop Art and psychedelic; I decided to base my print around that theme and chose Our George as my subject! Our George Aaand here's the result: A Hard Day's Bright Bad Trip Since I'm pretty much a beginner at screenprinting they didn't turn out perfect, but I quite like the imperfections because they are interesting and sort of melty-like. You have to have mega strong arms and big piano hands to be a really great screenprinter; which is why I never want to get on the wrong side of Helen at Nelly's Treasures !

What A Sell Out!

A Quivering Goddess

Allo Guvner! I haven't forgotten about my little blog! I've just been very very busy hunting wabbits aaaaand catching up on school work / applying for uni. Today I finished one of my final pieces so I thought I'd share: Oh, Diana! It's not perfect but as the delicious Helena Bonham Carter once said: 'Perfection is overrated / Imperfection is underrated' She speaks the truth. I am sure that I have much more to tell, but it escapes me at the moment so here is a picture of our Bert relaxing at Bournemouth beach. Camembert Also, the lovely tattooed sailor bag sold just before christmas! This guy: This guy right here Never to be repeated again!
