Still on my work placement with the fabul-oh-so  Nelly's Treasures in Cardiff! Yesterday (day two) was a Disaster Day for me; almost everything I touched seemed to go a bit wrong! The day started off well with some bonding over music tastes*, Photoshop work and paper cutting, which working as a team we did in no time at all. After we exposed some screens to print later on in the day, I was set a sewing task and couldn't seem to get the darned thing right! I blame the unfamiliar machine of course; it's like driving someone else's car, or playing their guitar. It goes but... not in the same way! Anyway I did a pretty good job overall in the end, due to my 'tenacious attitude' (my uni tutor's words, not mine). Later, I did a little bit of printing and although I have always been good at it in uni I managed to mess one up and 'flood under' the design, making the print all blobby. We've finally had our grades back from uni for the Textiles Visual Studies unit and I'm proud to say that I had 78% for that unit! Which [in case you're not sure] is a very strong grade! Sometimes it's hard to know whether you're doing the right sorts of things at the right time but I guess so far I have been, which is reassuring. Hola! I'm still slogging away at the art classes; we just started a new unit which is all about ourlovelyselves and last night's lesson was on screenprinting, so I thought I'd share my work since I loooved it! Regular readers might have picked up on my love of all things 60s, Pop Art and psychedelic; I decided to base my print around that theme and chose Our George as my subject! Our George Aaand here's the result: A Hard Day's Bright Bad Trip Since I'm pretty much a beginner at screenprinting they didn't turn out perfect, but I quite like the imperfections because they are interesting and sort of melty-like. You have to have mega strong arms and big piano hands to be a really great screenprinter; which is why I never want to get on the wrong side of Helen at Nelly's Treasures !

Well last week I managed to rustle up some nifty ol' cushion covers: These were made from a couple of my screenprinted samples. Shabby chic to the maxtreme! The lacy edging is vintage which I managed to pick up from Judy's Affordable Vintage Fair a while back. It's got kind of an art deco design: While I think the rose design on the purple version reminds me of the Yorkshire Rose: Maybe?! Anyway, they're both over in my Folksy shop ! Miami Nice This was the result of my last printing class - two more screenprinted samples in different colourways. I'm calling this my 'Accidentally 80's' collection. My teacher said they were very Jasper Johns Pop Tart Aww yeah aww yeah

Oh hai. As I mentioned earlier I have started a textile printing class at the AUCB so here is a little peep at what I have done so far. Screeny, screeny... screeny swirly apples The first is a stencil/screen print, my teacher said it was very Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Art Nouveau - it was really supposed to be 60s ish but that’s cool because they stole everything from Art Nouveau were pretty nuts about Art Nouveau in the 60s anyway. I'm not crazy about the colours/tones I used but maybe that will improve with practise. The second and third are lino prints from a lino block I made about 10 years ago, ha! I call him Hexapoo or Hexopus, I used to draw him a lot and he's still lookin good after all this time. I thought the others in the class would laugh at him but the general concensus was that he's cute. He's supposed to be tough and swirly but I guess cute is the next best thing.
