Sarah Appleton - Textile Artist Blog

This week I was honoured to be invited along to Queen Elizabeth School with artist Sarah Redmond-Fareham to help work on a super exciting outreach project called Her:Story - a project about inspiring women throughout history (get the pun?!) Each artist was assigned a different female to study, and they all came armed with sketches and photographs ready to create a bust of their subject out of clay. Sarah setting up! [The secret is that the face is already in the clay, you just have to remove the parts that are not face]:) Most of the students had never worked with clay much before, but neither had I; Sarah is the expert and was a fantastic teacher as all the students ended up with great results. I was on hand for moral support, suggestions and cleaning up duties! At first, the students worked tentatively, but after the initial features were put into place, you could see the confidence grow and a lot of recognisable faces came out. This year my fellow art tutor and friend  Jeannie Brunskill  started a new after school art club at  The Reef , Colehill and she kindly asked me to help her out with running the classes. Little Indie  is a not-for-profit organisation and runs on a Monday afternoon from 3:30 - 5pm for children 5 - 10 years of age. Little Indie at The Reef, Colehill We've now broken up for half term, but I really wanted to share some of the incredible projects that we've been working on this year because they're so creative and brilliant! This week  Threads of Narrative  (my shared textile project with Lisa Earley) opened at Kingston Lacy in Wimborne. They've incorporated some of our work into their larger exhibition 'Beyond the Portrait' about some of the ladies of the Bankes family and we've got our own space in the laundry room out in the courtyard. If you didn't get around to seeing the exhibition the first time at Walford Mill Crafts, then this is a great chance to see it since it will be on until October!
