Little Indie Art Club

This year my fellow art tutor and friend Jeannie Brunskill started a new after school art club at The Reef, Colehill and she kindly asked me to help her out with running the classes. Little Indie is a not-for-profit organisation and runs on a Monday afternoon from 3:30 - 5pm for children 5 - 10 years of age.

We've now broken up for half term, but I really wanted to share some of the incredible projects that we've been working on this year because they're so creative and brilliant! So in no particular order, here they are:

This week the children finished off their 'Inside Out' houses, for which they designed, drew and coloured in a picture of their dream house! The picture of the outer house flips down to reveal the rooms inside and they had great fun dreaming up the interior spaces. The above is one particularly fabulous example, which lots of love and care went into; the clouds are my favourite part!

Previously the kids made these gorgeous colourful backgrounds for llama collages; these were created with oil pastels and watercolour paints and then left to dry whilst the llamas were made. Some used a template for the outline, but they all came out looking very unique and fun:

The kids used chalk pastels to create a soft and furry effect on the llamas before attaching them to the background. They turned out amazing; the different medias create so much texture and with the addition of a 3D fabric flower it's a wonderful effect.

A little mini project that some worked on this week was these simple, yet stunning 3D butterflies!

A few of them decided on this rainbow pattern, which I just adore (if you know me, you'll know I love a rainbow), whilst some opted for a more random look. After drawing and colouring them, we cut them out, made pipe cleaner bodies and then attached them to a wood slice, so that they appear to be resting. They looked beautiful!

These are a fab mixed media otter and folk style birds on wood! I know the children are very excited about the otter and I can't wait to see those folk birds; it looks spectacular!

Repair Cafés at the Green and Thrifty Fortnight!

In February, I had the immense pleasure of being part of the Hampshire Libraries Green and Thrifty Fortnight as a touring Fabric Repair Café. This was an exciting challenge, as although I have been repairing mine and other people's clothes for years (with varying results), in this case anyone and anything could have turned up! The idea was that I was to teach the people who came along how to mend the items themselves with drop in sessions and specific workshops; patching, darning and adjusting children's clothes. Some People Take A Self-Care Day, I Take 2 Self-Care Years

Wow, it's been over two years since my last blog post! 😅 I've had plenty of exciting crafty adventures in the meantime and have lots to post about, so I'll start with some quick updates to get things going. Back in 2019 I was asked to drop in and chat on the  Culture+  podcast  Women Know Your Place . I resisted posting about this when it first came out because: 1. Fear of hearing the sound of my own voice in a recording (I know you know what I mean) 2. I thought I would come across negatively for talking about personal stuff (sharing is hard and doesn't always pay off) However, having reviewed the recording last week I have decided that those fears were completely unfounded so I'm sharing it now! In a nutshell, I talk about a few of the projects I had been working on at the time and then go on to reveal the reason why I have fallen off the radar a bit. Three Pears Of What?

Well last time (if you remember) I promised that when I finished some half way decent sketches on my City & Guilds course I would post pictures, so here we go: Three Pairs I did this one in charcoal, I was pretty happy with the results. One lady in my class commented that it reminded her of the phrase 'two's company, three's a crowd'; except she phrased it more like 'two talk, the third will walk', which (being a notorious loner) I rather liked. The shadow of the stalk (bottom left) is my favourite part. Here I painted my Peace Lily , this time using Indian Ink, which I'd never used before. I liked that I got to start with a clean slate using the ink and I had a lot of fun making this painting! It's not the most technically correct piece in the world with regards to shading and what have you but I like it because the composition works really well.
